Search and AI Answers: What Works for Cyprus Businesses

Published Updated 9 min read 1744 words

Google states that its AI features rest on its ordinary ranking systems. What the studies found, what does not help, and what a business in Cyprus does first to be found and quoted.

A business in Cyprus that wishes to be found in Google and quoted by AI assistants needs pages that their crawlers can read and that state something specific the business knows at first hand. Google states that its AI features rest on its ordinary ranking systems and that no special file or markup is required. The first work is therefore access, direct answers, named sources and current dates, and its results arrive over months.

Google now answers some searches with two AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, which write a response and link the pages that support it. Its guide to AI features for site owners says that both may issue "multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build a response, and that "AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search". A page can therefore be linked as support for a search that nobody typed in those words.

Assistants outside Google read the web with crawlers of their own. OpenAI's page on its crawlers states that sites opted out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". Perplexity's page on its crawlers recommends allowing PerplexityBot in a site's robots.txt file, the file that tells crawlers what they may read, so that the site appears in its results.

How Google's AI features choose what to show

Google's guide to its generative AI features, last updated on 10 July 2026, states that "our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems". The features retrieve pages from the same index as ordinary search and compose a response from them. Google's conclusion for site owners is: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

Two conditions of eligibility are stated. To be shown as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". The site must also be included in these features through a control in Search Console, which Google made available to all websites by 31 August 2026 and which includes a site by default.

Among eligible pages, the guide places one matter above every other: "Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide." Its example contrasts a review written from personal experience with a summary of what others have already published.

What the studies found

Quotations, figures and cited sources. In a paper accepted to the KDD conference in 2024, Aggarwal and five co-authors rewrote web pages in nine ways and measured how visible each version then was in an AI answer, on the 1,000 test queries of a benchmark of 10,000. They report that "including citations, quotations from relevant sources, and statistics can significantly boost source visibility, with an increase of over 40% across various queries". The limits are material. The answers came from an engine the researchers built on an OpenAI model of 2022, which read the top five Google results for each query; a check on Perplexity used 200 queries; and the authors state that the effect varies between subjects. The paper measured visibility within an answer and did not measure visits or enquiries.

Dates. Ahrefs examined 16.975 million cited addresses across AI assistants and Google's results. Pages cited by the assistants were 1,064 days old on average, against 1,432 days for pages in Google's ordinary results. This is a correlation between two sets of pages: the study did not test whether revising a page causes it to be cited. It also found that the average cited page was still 2.9 years old, and that Google's AI Overviews cited pages 16 days older, on average, than its ordinary results.

Structure. Microsoft's guidance on AI search answers, published in October 2025, is advice from the company whose index serves Copilot, and it reports no test of its own recommendations. It recommends "One- to two-sentence responses that directly address a question" and "Sentences that make sense even when pulled out of context", set under clear headings, with lists and tables for steps and comparisons. It warns against placing important answers in tabs or expandable menus: "AI systems may not render hidden content, so key details can be skipped."

What does not help

  • Repeating keywords. The KDD paper found that adding more keywords from the query, the method it calls keyword stuffing, offered "little to no improvement", and on Perplexity it performed "10% worse than the baseline". Google's spam policies, last updated on 28 August 2026, treat the practice as spam and give as an example "Blocks of text that list cities and regions that a web page is trying to rank for".
  • Files and markup added for AI engines. Google's guide states that no new machine-readable file or special structured data is needed, and says of an llms.txt file: "Doing so will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them." Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added structured data between August 2025 and March 2026, compared them with 4,000 control pages, and found "no major uplift in citations on any platform" among Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. Every page in that sample was already cited often, so the study does not show what structured data does for a page that is not yet cited. Google still advises its use for the enhanced results it supports in ordinary search, provided that it matches the visible text of the page.
  • A page for each town. Google's spam policies name as doorway abuse "Having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page". A business with one office in Nicosia states that fact on the pages where it is relevant and does not publish a page for Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos in turn.
  • A page for each version of a question. Google's guide warns that creating "separate content for every possible variation of how people might search", when done primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its policy on scaled content abuse.
  • Bought links. The same policies list "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam.

What a business in Cyprus does first

  1. Confirm that the site can be read. Google lists "Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt" first among its practices, and adds that the hosting service must allow it as well. The same file should admit OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot if the business wishes to appear in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  2. Check the Search Console control described above, and confirm that the site is set to be included.
  3. Place the answer at the top of each page, in one or two sentences that can be understood without the rest of the page, and keep it out of tabs and expandable menus.
  4. Write from what the business knows at first hand: its own cases, its own figures and its own methods. A page that restates what is already published elsewhere is the kind Google's guide describes as commodity content.
  5. Support each claim with a figure, a quotation or a named source, and link the source.
  6. Show the date of publication and the date of the last revision, and revise a page when its facts change. A new date on unchanged text is not a revision.
  7. Complete the Google Business Profile, which Google's guide says can help a business appear in AI responses as well as in other results.
  8. Measure the outcome in Search Console, where Google provides a report on performance in its generative AI features.

The check on our SEO services page reads a home page and reports on thirteen points, among them whether search engines may read it, its title, its description and its main heading. Where a business lacks the time to write, our content service prepares each piece with reference to what already ranks for the query, and the client's subject experts review it before publication.

Google's help page on local ranking states: "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity." It explains that relevance is how well a Business Profile matches the search, that distance is measured from the person searching, and that prominence rests on information such as how many websites link to the business and how many reviews it has. The page adds that "Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results", and that a better local ranking cannot be requested or bought.

For a business in Cyprus the practical work is a verified profile with the full address, the opening hours and the correct category, kept up to date, and a reply to each customer review. Our SEO service covers the Google Business Profile, local listings and reviews.

How long results take

Google states that crawling a changed page "can take anywhere from several days to several months", and that meeting every requirement does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or shown. In our own work, initial movement typically appears within three to six months, with the larger gains arriving between months six and twelve. Technical and local SEO tend to progress faster than the rest.

We do not guarantee first-page rankings, because search rankings depend on factors outside our control. Our monthly report gives the rankings for the keywords that matter, the organic traffic, and the enquiries or sales which that traffic produced.
